Gabion Box

Gabion Box

The gabion net is manufactured from low-carbon steel wire, offering high corrosion resistance, strength, and ductility, or from the same steel wire coated with PVC through mechanical weaving for enhanced durability and protection.

According to ASTM and EN standards, the diameter of mild steel wire used varies according to engineering design requirements.

Gabion Box Description

A Gabion Box is a cage-like structure made from high-strength low-carbon steel wire or PVC-coated steel wire through mechanical weaving. It is widely used for flood control, riverbank protection, retaining walls, slope stabilization, and erosion prevention. According to ASTM and EN standards, the diameter of mild steel wire used varies based on engineering design requirements, generally ranging from 2.0–4.0 mm. The tensile strength of the gabion wire is not less than 38 kg/m², and the metal coating weight is typically over 245 g/m². The diameter of the edge wire is usually larger than that of the mesh wire, and the twisted sections of paired wires are at least 50 mm long to ensure that the metal and PVC coatings remain intact in the twisted areas.

Gabion Box

Gabion Box Features

1. Its flexible structure allows it to adapt to slope changes without damage, providing greater safety and stability compared to rigid structures.
2. It offers high anti-scouring resistance, capable of withstanding water flow speeds of up to 6 m/s.
3. The naturally permeable design tolerates groundwater filtration and natural forces, allowing suspended particles and silt to settle within the rock fill, which promotes vegetation growth and gradually restores the natural ecological environment.

Gabion Box Specifications

Gabion Box Specifications

(1) Aperture: 60*80mm, 80*100mm, 80*120mm, 100*120mm, 120*150mm, 90*110mm
The length of the twisted part of the pair of wires shall not be less than 50mm to ensure that the metal coating and PVC coating of the steel wire in the twisted part are not damaged.
(2) Wire diameter: Gabion nets are divided into three wire diameters—mesh wire, edge wire, and binding wire
1. The range of mesh is 2mm-4mm
2. The edge wire is generally larger than the mesh wire, 0.5-1.0mm thicker than the mesh wire
3. The binding wire is generally smaller than the mesh wire, and the common one is 2.2mm
(3) Steel wire tension: not less than 38kg/m2 380N/mm

Gabion Box Uses

Gabion nets are widely used for slope reinforcement, foundation pit support, mountain rock surface stabilization, slope greening, and as protective barriers along railways and highways. They can also be fabricated into cages and mattress structures for rivers, dams, and seawalls to provide anti-scouring protection, as well as reservoir and river closure applications. One of the greatest threats to rivers is the erosion of banks caused by water scouring, which can lead to floods, significant property damage, loss of life, and severe soil erosion. By addressing these issues, the use of ecological gabion structures has proven to be one of the most effective long-term solutions for protecting riverbeds and banks.
